‘Disco’ by Johnny Palantine MV

The song ‘Disco’ by Johnny Palantine was made quite a while ago: 2-3 years ago?

I recently discovered this song from my friend who is the vocalist and the main character in the MV that we have produced. I thought this song deserves more than just an audio recording.. and so the idea of stop-motion came into mind! Individual pictures taken in sequence to create a video :)

The story of the MV goes a little like this:

-Girl produces a Treasure Map from her mouth.

-She starts to follow the Treasure Map.

-Find a car (a box).

-Drives a little.

-Meets a ninja teddy bear.

-Shit goes down. The teddy bear destroys the car.

-Girl is forced to ‘walk’ again.

-Girl comes to the end of the Map has to walk on air.

-Girl falls on her bum onto the X.

-Digs for the treasure and finds a scrap book.

-The scrap book illustrates the vocals and instruments of the song.

-Girl wakes up from ‘dream’.

-Girl sees all of the above from one single photograph (imagination - all in her head).

(Inception much? :P was it mind blowing?)

This 3 minute MV contains about 830+ images with a few minor repeated scenes. It took about 3 hours of shooting within 2 days and a million hours of editing (6 hours :P)

‘Wonderful Tonight’ MV cover

Directors Notes:

I hope you all (at least a few) got the subtle message being executed in the video. If not, here is the story that we’re trying to portray:

The main actor - Simon Lee (the guy at the start) is supposed to be secretly gay for the other guy (Hubert Cheng dressed in a T-Shirt). Simon brings Jade Chan (main actress) to Hubert’s party as a cover up for his homosexuality, but Jade and Hubert end up hitting it off and Simon becomes jealous of Jade. At the end, he realises how much he loves Hubert but is also content that Hubert is happy. 

The scenes at the start of the video between Simon and Jade is to make the audience think that there is a connection between Simon and Jade but in reality, they are just friends. It is to hide the fact that Simon is secretly homosexual, but because Hubert is not, Simon has to hide his feelings for him to retain their friendship. 

When Simon leaves the party, he looks back to get a last glance of Hubert rather than Jade.

The lyrics switch at the end of the song in the last verse, changing all the “she’s” to “he’s”… “her” to “him” when Simon is longing for Hubert’s affection. 

(Note: Simon is only playing the role of someone that is homosexual, in real life, he isn’t.. hehe)
